Maintaining social distance is the order of this pandemic. Which pave the way for people to raise questions like how to have sex in this lockdown situation being self-isolated? How safe having sex can in this pandemic time?
Before finding the answer of these questions, let’s have a fact check.
Novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 tend to disperse through one-to-one close contact.
- When we cough or sneeze, we release some droplet through our mouth and nose. The coronavirus comes out with those respiratory droplets. If people stands close, this droplets may catch them or perhaps be inhaled.
- When a Covid-19 person speaks or breathe, s/he can emits some viral elements termed aerosols. Those particles hovering in the air can affect nearby people if they inhale.
- Study suggests that this virus can remain alive of surfaces. We can catch it from polluted surfaces if we touch our faces hereafter.
- Whether an infected person contain this virus in semen and saliva is still unknown. However, scientists found the existence of this virus in feces. Spread of the virus like that means is highly unlikely.
Possibility of Spreading COVID-19 through Sex
As current data suggests, presence of coronavirus has not been found in semen or vaginal fluids of any person. This is the testament of the fact that this virus doesn’t pass on via sexual fluids.
Don’t forget, coronavirus can disperse through droplets comes from the nose and mouth of an ill person, including saliva. Which can only take place through close contact.
Bases on that premise, we can say that sex can be factor in spreading this virus. Because, during sex two people come very close to each other as they do hugging, kissing or laying naked on top of each other. Oh! Do not to forget about breathing. But, so far it is certain that sex directly doesn’t induce the COVID-19.
“The coronavirus is a respiratory virus. It can be transmitted through your saliva and intimate contact, but it is not directly transmitted genitally.”
Mark Surrey, MD, a clinical professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine
Hugging and shaking hands might have banned these days to avoid COVID-19. However, according to recent study, sexual intercourse may able to dodge that infection list.
The research was aimed to find out the correlation between sex and coronavirus. And it was published in the journal of fertility and sterility by a group of scientists from the University of Utah Health.
The experiment conducted on 34 men in China who were test positive with coronavirus and had gone under treatment. The researchers mentioned two shortcoming of this study. One, the sample size was small. Two, the subjects of the study were not seriously sick.
Besides, they fail to decipher as to how coronavirus can affect male fertility in the long run.
“The fact that in this small, preliminary study that it appears the virus that causes COVID-19 doesn’t show up in the testes or semen could be an important finding.”
James M. Hotaling, M.D., a co-author of the study, said in the press release announcing it.
“If a disease like COVID-19 were sexually transmittable that would have major implications for disease prevention and could have serious consequences for a man’s long-term reproductive health.”
The study also refer to the impact of past viruses like Ebola and Zika on the act of intercourse. As those viruses were transmittable through sex, they are digging dip to find any relation between sex and coronavirus spreading.
Is Sex Permitted during COVID-19 Outbreak?
During this pandemic outbreak, governments in many countries impose lockdown or even emergency situation to compel people to stay at home. The reason being this measure will limit one-to-one physical contact. Hence it will put a reign on spreading the virus. Following are some stuffs we should follow regarding sex.
Intimacy when partner have symptoms
If any of the partners show any signs of COVID-19 like high temperature, throat pain, coughing and sneezing or trouble breathing, s/he should restrict all intimate physical interaction in order to protect the transmission of the virus. That means we should abstain from any sort of physical intimacy like touching, kissing, hugging, cuddling. Experts even against sharing the bed for at least next 7 days.
Sex without physical contact
Experts have not found any risk associated with having sex with self and COVID-19. The New York City guidelines put it this way: “You are your safest sex partner.” Masturbation is harmless and can be the finest way to enjoys sex during this coronavirus outbreak. However, don’t forget to rinse your hands or any sex toys for 20 seconds before consuming them.
Besides, one can indulge oneself to have sex without close physical contact through phone or sexting.
Sex with a partner you dwell with
If both the partner live in same place and have not come close to any COVID-19 patient and any of the partners have not revealed any symptoms, then they can carry on their sexual relationship.
But, if any of the partner having sex with outside people, then both of them are exposed to getting COVID -19.
Another aspect, if one of the partner belongs to immunocompromised group like diabetes, then precautionary steps are necessary. The New York City Health Department recommends to avoid sexual intercourse altogether.
Sex with someone live away
Some countries put strict restriction on casual sex or to have sex with people one doesn’t dwell with. Because it increases the risk of transmitting COVID-19 or catching it. Hence weaken the government effort of maintaining social distancing and put public health at risk.
Scenario of Physical Intimacy during Lock-down
The boss of Reckitt Benckiser, Laxman Narasimhan, said that coronavirus put a limit on peoples’ sexual life. He said this statement based on the data of their condom sales, which falls sharply during March as lockdown was enforced. This group produces durex condom.
Besides, current situation makes an impact on peoples’ psychology as they are going through some stress. Moreover, women are worried what would be their course of actions if they get pregnant during this COVID-19 outbreak.
“Intimate occasions are going down and that is a manifestation of anxiety.”
Covid-19 has bring some changes in peoples’ social life. It limits people movement and interaction with each other. The virus bars people from physical proximity, let alone having sex. Although scientists have not found any relation between sexual intercourse and spread of coronavirus through it. All in all, sex is not prohibited during this pandemic. We can still enjoy the act of intercourse if we maintain certain measures.
